AN INSPIRING NEIGHBOURHOOD
|
The north-western Veluwe, a part of the province of Gelderland, is a beautiful area with a lot of places to visit. Every year, thousands of tourists visit this part of the Netherlands, where woodlands, heath lands, water and sand drifts are within reach.
The neighbourhood of Doornspijk is full of art and culture. You may visit, for example, the mediaeval city of Elburg. Elburg offers the tourists several museums: the old Synagogue, the Historical Museum of Church Organs, the Museum in the Town Hall and old small houses, built in the town ramparts. Not far from Elburg, in the village of ‘t Harde, is the Dutch Artillery Museum.
Only a few miles from Elburg, you may visit Museum ‘De Bovenstreek’ in the village of Oldebroek. This museum is located in an old farmer’s house. In Hattem, a small, mediaeval town at the river IJssel, one can find a museum with paintings of Anton Pieck, Jan Voerman Sr. and Jan Voerman Jr.
South of Doornspijk is the village of Nunspeet. It’s situated in the woodlands of the Veluwe and offers an ‘Oudheidkamer’ (Antiquities’ Room) and a watch tower with a splendid view. A weekly market is held every Thursday.
In the village of Vierhouten is a well kept secret: Het Verscholen Dorp (The Hidden Village), a refuge for persons in hiding during World War II.
South of Nunspeet is another historic town: Harderwijk, situated at the old Zuiderzee (now IJsselmeer). Here you will find mediaeval town walls, the Catharina Chapel, the Church of Onze Lieve Vrouw (Our Lady), dating from the 16th century, and – of course – a place where you can buy and eat fresh smoked eel.
Doornspijk and the Veluwe offer a wide choice of places to visit, but there is a chance you won’t have enough time to enjoy them all.
